Shaping Spaces wellbeing programmes

YMCA Shaping Spaces wellbeing programmes aim to get people out into open green spaces, learn mindfulness techniques, enjoy wildlife and meet new people. Our programmes are designed to help individuals overcome barriers to inclusion, improve mental health and promote positive thinking by connecting with natural green spaces and wildlife.

Shaping Spaces All Ages is an opportunity for adults who want to get out in nature, help the environment and improve wellbeing.  It is a blend of wellbeing and light conservation tasks.

For about three hours on Thursdays, participants and two staff will work on light conservation or environmental tasks whilst also spending time together enjoying a beautiful local green space. The project will work with small groups of people who are wanting to learn new skills, make new connections and improve their wellbeing, learn about conservation and nature, and keep active whilst doing something positive for wildlife and for Bradford. Staff will create a safe and welcoming space for all and will take time to explain what we are doing so that everyone is clear about what is expected of them. No experience of conservation or practical work is necessary but participants should be willing to be outside in rain and shine, heat and cold. Participants can attend up to 26 sessions.  Transport by minibus and some waterproof clothing can be provided.

Shaping Spaces 16-25 is our wellbeing programme is for 16–25 year olds in the Bradford area who want to get outside, make friends, and improve their wellbeing. Spending time out in nature is proven to be very beneficial for our mental and physical health, especially when we slow down and notice our surroundings (mindfulness). Participants of Shaping Spaces 16-25, will spend time with a small group of young adults in beautiful green spaces around Bradford, improving wellbeing, increasing social interaction, and building connection with nature, each other and with self.

The programme runs on Wednesdays during the day. Our base is at Culture Fusion on Thornton Road and we will set out from and return to there in our minibus each session.  Participants can attend up to 26 sessions over one year from when they start.

We support participants to:

  • build new friendships
  • increase their confidence and self-esteem
  • Connect more with nature and themselves
  • improve their personal wellbeing
  • gain tools to enable them to maintain their wellbeing after the programme
  • develop their future plans and life skills
